The launch area on Prong Pond can accommodate small boats and paddle craft.

Prong Pond: A Moosehead Region Gem

By Tom Richardson

Access to this beautiful central Maine pond is quick, easy, and well worth the effort.

Prong Pond is located some six miles north of downtown Greenville and less than a mile south of Lily Bay State Park, off Lily Bay Road. After entering Prong Pond Road (a dirt road), take your first right and continue another 100 yards to the parking and launch area.

Prong Pond is just east of Moosehead Lake.

The pond is shallow (max depth 27 feet) and features several small islands and secluded coves in which you might spy a moose or eagle. It also offers good fishing for smallmouth bass and yellow perch.

Note: the pond runs northwest/southwest, so strong winds from either direction can make for a challenging paddle.

If you don’t have your own canoe or kayak, you can rent one for $25 from Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville. They will give you the key to the padlock (as well as paddles and lifejackets) that secures several two-person canoes near the put-in spot.
