Towers of Power: ATV Ride to Bingham Wind Farm, Bingham, Maine

One of the more surreal ATV destinations in the Kennebec Valley Region is the Bingham Wind Farm, in Bingham, Maine. A good jumping-off spot for this trip is 201 Powersports, a Polaris ATV and snowmobile outfitter right on Rte. 201 in Bingham. You can rent a Polaris Rzr side-by-side (2- or 4-seater) at 201 Powersports and head off on your own ATV adventure!

From 201 Powersports, the wind farm is 10 miles distant. Round-trip can run anywhere from two to six hours, depending on the trails and how much of the project you want to see.

The wind farm itself—which runs along a high ridge line amid spruce and hardwood forest—is quite impressive, and you really can’t appreciate how massive the towers are until you’re standing directly below them, listening to the whoosh of the giant blades sweeping overhead. Constructed in 2015-16, the site comprises 57 towers, making it the largest wind farm project in the state. One is left to marvel at how these futuristic “towers of power” were constructed in this remote part of Maine.

By the way, if you want to plan an overnight trip or longer stay, accommodations can be found across the street from 201 Powersports, at North Country Rivers, which offers comfortable modern cabins and can also arrange whitewater rafting and moose-safari trips.
