3 Dead After Falling Through Ice on Lake Champlain

South Hero, VT

Three men have died after falling through the ice in separate incidents on Lake Champlain, prompting officials to issue a thin-ice warning. Vermont State Police reported that 2 fishermen, age 71 and 88, fell through the ice while riding in an enclosed Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) on Saturday morning, Feb. 11, in South Hero.

Just 2 days earlier, on Thursday, Feb 9., 62-year-old Wayne Alexander also died after falling through the ice on Champlain. His body was recovered by Vermont State Police rescue crews.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife officials warn that the ice conditions on Champlain are considered unsafe and are advising the public to stay off the ice. A local ice fishing tournament has also been canceled.
