Vermont Fish & Wildlife, the CT River Conservancy, and other partners are in the process of removing the decrepit Blake Higgins Dam, which has blocked fish passage between the Saxton River and the main branch of the Connecticut River in Westminster/Bellows Falls.

The removal will re-open prime spawning and nursery habitat for native migratory fish such as sea lamprey, American eel, and Atlantic salmon. It will also improve water quality, flood resilience, sediment transport, and provide community recreation by providing easier, safer access to a popular local swimming hole.
