The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust has been awarded a grant of $25,000 to establish a Children’s Hiking Trail Challenge aimed at getting more kids out hiking the trails of the Kennebunks region. The grant was made by the Tommy McNamara Charitable Foundation.
The Kennebunk Land Trust and the Arundel Conservation Trust are expected to collaborate on the trail challenge by expanding public outreach and the number of trails to explore.
All three trusts will use the funds to enhance their trails, create new trails, distribute materials for the challenge, and install a plaque at Meadow Woods Preserve in memory of Tommy McNamara.
The Challenge itself is expected to launch this spring. Open to children in grades one through eight in the Kennebunks, it will feature a list of approximately 15 trails leading to a scenic location. Participants who visit at least 10 of the 15 designated locations over the summer will be awarded a Tommy McNamara medal in the fall.
