Christopher Huyler, a 44-year-old male hiker from New Hampshire, was found dead at around 1:00 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 23) morning after he was reported missing the previous evening. An experienced skier and outdoors enthusiast, Huyler was hiking on the Coppermine Trail in the White Mountains when he presumably slipped and fell down an icy slope, despite wearing micro spikes.
Huyler had last communicated with his wife late Friday afternoon, telling her he was returning to the trailhead. However, when he failed to return, his wife contacted authorities, who launched a search-and-rescue mission at around 9:00 p.m.
Authorities urge winter hikers to use extreme caution in the White Mountains, and to always carry a map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, a headlamp, a fire-starter, kit, a first-aid kit, a whistle, a rain/wind jacket and pants, and a knife.
