On Tuesday, April 21, New Hampshire Conservation Officers located the body of Kent Wood, 61, who had been reported missing by family members after failing to return from a weekend hiking trip in the White Mountains. According to NH Fish & Game, Kent had camped at the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln on Friday, and started hiking Saturday morning, “with warm temperatures and clear skies.” He was apparently unprepared for the drastic change in weather that occurred on Sunday and Monday in Franconia Notch, which received 3 to 5 inches of snow and freezing temperatures. Kent’s body was discovered on the Kinsman Pond Trail.
The incident serves as a reminder to White Mountains hikers, who should be aware that the weather at higher elevations can deteriorate rapidly. Several hikers have already been rescued in the Whites this April.
