Hiker Dies in White Mountains

Guopeng “Tony” Li, 28, of Salem, NH, died of exposure while hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains on Christmas Eve. Li was hiking the 8.6-mile Bridle Path/Falling Waters Loop in Franconia Notch. He started his hike in late morning, and was apparently caught on the trail after dark with no additional clothing or light source. According to a New Hampshire Fish & Game official, Li had hiked in the White Mountains previously and was an avid skier, but was inexperienced with winter hiking conditions.

Li’s death marks the 21st hiking fatality in NH this year, and is one of a recent series involving young people hiking alone and without proper preparations for winter conditions. The past 4 years saw an average of 22 hiking fatalities in NH.
