Voters in the town of Camden, Maine, have approved plans for the removal of the historic, 200-year-old Montgomery Dam, which regulates water flow of the Megunticook River before it enters Camden Harbor.
Removal of the aging dam will reduce flood risk in downtown Camden caused by heavy rain, and allow the Megunticook to flow naturally. It will also make it easier for herring, smelt, and eel to reach upstream areas.
It’s estimated that removing the dam will save up to $1.5 million in taxpayer money to repair and maintain the dam.
