The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank will open a new preserve on Chappaquiddick Island. The Caleb’s Pond Preserve is a six-acre parcel of maritime forest and marshland bordering a tidal salt pond connected to Katama Bay, on the eastern end of the island.

The preserve is open to the public, despite the Edgartown Conservation Commission’s rejection of a proposal to create a stairway on the bank of the pond that would allow the public to easily launch paddlecraft.
