Snowmobilers Collide on Squam Lake, NH

Squam Lake, Holderness, NH

Two snowmobilers from New Hampshire were injured when their sleds collided on the night of February 26, 2023. The accident happened on Squam Lake in Holderness at around 12:45 a.m., according to New Hampshire Fish & Game. Conditions at the time included heavy snowfall with frequent gusts of wind, creating whiteout conditions.

First responders found Jon Wardwell, 56, and Richard Sampson, 58, approximately a half-mile from the snowmobile trail where it exits the lake. According to the F&G report, Sampson’s snowmobile experienced a drive-belt failure, causing rapid deceleration. Wardwell, who was following close behind, could not stop in time and collided with the rear of Sampson’s snowmobile. Both operators were ejected from their machines, resulting in head injuries and loss of consciousness.

The accident was reported by a third snowmobiler in the group, who called 911. An ambulance transported Wardwell to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Sampson refused on-scene treatment, but was driven to a different medical facility for evaluation.
