Spring Birding Competition to be Held in Boston

A spring birding competition called “Big Day Boston,” will be held in Boston on May 6, 2023. The event challenges urban birders to identify as many birds as possible in a single day within an established perimeter inside the city (see below).

Competitors will meet in the morning at Copp’s Hill Terrace in the North End, where they will be given a checklist of more than 100 bird species they might encounter. Whoever sees the most of them by 4:00 p.m. wins the contest.

Registration/Awards: Copp’s Hill Terrace.
Boundaries: Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown, Downtown, the Leather District, the North End, and the West End, including the Common and the Public Garden. See map.

Timeline:
Checkin/kickoff: Opens at 9:30 AM at Copp’s Hill Terrace. Birding starts at 10 AM
Checklists submitted: No later than 4 PM at Copp’s Hill Terrace
Winner announced/awards: 4:30 PM at Copp’s Hill Terrace
