Tips for Preventing Black Bear-Human Conflicts

When black bears emerge from their winter dens, they will seek to rebuild fat stores lost during the cold months. As they search for food, many will find tempting food sources in the form of birdseed, garbage, backyard grill grease, and even pets. To prevent or limit conflicts with black bears, be proactive about securing and removing these backyard attractants; otherwise, bears may become conditioned to associate human habitation with food. Here are some simple tips:

Black bears will feast on bird seed—and destroy your feeders in the process.

Bird Feeders

  • Remove bird feeders between April 1 and November 1
  • Rake up and dispose of unused bird seed

Garbage

  • Store garbage in a building or enclosed by electric fence
  • Don’t leave garbage receptacles on street overnight
  • Keep dumpster lids and storage doors closed and latched
  • Use bear-resistant dumpsters or garbage cans
  • Keep outbuilding and garage doors closed at all times and repair broken windows and doors

Grills

  • Clean grill thoroughly after each use
  • Store grill inside when not in use

Pets/Livestock

  • Feed pets inside
  • Store livestock feed and pet food in a secure building or shed
  • Install and maintain bear-resistant fencing for livestock, especially chickens
