The Green Mountain Club of Vermont has succeeded in raising $4 million for projects along the popular Long Trail hiking route, which runs 272 miles from the Massachusetts border to Canada. The LT sees roughly 200,000 hikers per season, with the number increasing dramatically during the pandemic. In 2020, the trail drew 35% more visitors than in 2019, according to GMC.
Projects will include trail improvement and maintenance, vegetation maintenance, safety improvements, and cunstruction of a visitors center on the northern part of the trail. Money will also be invested in equipment and facilities needed by search-and-rescue teams.
