Visitors to the Clinton, Connecticut, area who are looking for a great spot to kayak or paddleboard would do well to check out the Indian River, a scenic tidal waterway.

You can access the river at the Clinton Landing & Gazebo, behind the Town Hall. From here, the serpentine channel leads south past the Indian River Marina and through verdant marshland before feeding into Clinton Harbor. It’s an easy, half-mile paddle that’s ideal for beginners.

If you want to keep going, head across the harbor to Cedar Island, which offers a lovely beach and good swimming. You can also paddle west, through the harbor and into the Hammonasset River.

If you need to refuel, stop at the Lobster Landing for one of the best lobster rolls this side of Maine, or Rocky’s Aqua restaurant at the Cedar Island Marina.

Kayak and SUP rentals, along with guided trips, lessons, and kayak sales, are available at Indian River Kayak & Marina. They carry a huge selection of kayaks including fishing kayaks, single kayaks and tandems. All come with paddles, PFDs and a map. Single kayaks rent for $33 for 2 hours, $45 for 4 hours and $70 per full day. Group trips and full-moon guided trips are offered.
