A Winter Paddle

Videography by Max Richardson

A rare calm and mild January day invited ENE host Tom Richardson to launch his kayak and explore a nearby salt marsh in southeastern Massachusetts. Winter is a chance to see the marsh in a whole new light and encounter species of winter waterfowl.

However, caution should be heeded due to the frigid water conditions. Steer clear of open water, pack a cell phone and sound-signaling device, monitor the weather closely, and dress appropriately, and of course, wear a PFD (required in most states during winter). Also, paddle with a partner—or at least station a drone operator nearby—to summon help in an emergency.
