A Fishing Family: The Gaurons of Hampton, NH

By Tom Richardson; Videography by Camden Spear

In 2022, we filmed a fishing segment with Al Gauron’s Deep-Sea Fishing & Whale Watching fleet as part of our Hampton, New Hampshire, episode.

The name “Gauron” is synonymous with Hampton sportfishing, as the Gauron family has been running fishing charters out of Hampton Harbor since the 1930s. Partly due to fluctuations in the local groundfish fisheries and the rise in eco-centric tourism, they eventually expanded the business to include whale-watching trips. However, fishing will always remain part of the Gauron DNA.

The Gaurons operate two large vessels and several smaller “six-pack” charter boats out of Hampton Harbor, and also offer trips aboard Capt. Derek Gauron’s 65-foot All In. I joined Derek and his crew for a half-day bottom fishing trip that took us some 20 miles offshore in blustery conditions.

In the accompanying short film, you’ll meet some of the Gauron family members and get a taste of party boat fishing off the New Hampshire Seacoast.
