Stopover

Videography by Halsey Fulton

Each fall, dozens of migratory bird species, from warblers to raptors, rely on Block Island as a place to rest and refuel for their journey south. Waiting to greet them is Kim Gaffett of the Nature Conservancy, who captures birds in mist nets and bands them, so their travels can be tracked. Her work provides important data on bird populations and their movements in a changing environment.
