Londonderry Calling: Viking Nordic Center Ski & Snowshoe

The Viking Nordic Center in Londonderry, Vermont, is one of the oldest cross-country ski centers in North America, boasting over 18 miles of trails. It also offers unique after-hours skiing and snowshoeing on 1.8 miles of trails illuminated by overhead lights and old railroad lanterns.

Viking’s beautiful trails wind through deep woods, around a beaver pond, and alongside the West River. The terrain ranges from easy, short wooded loops that keep skiers out of the wind to longer treks out to picnic tables placed at scenic vistas.

Some 16 miles of trails allow for both classic and skate-ski techniques, as well as snowshoeing. There are also 2 1/2 miles of dedicated snowshoe trails.

A popular feature at this family-friendly facility is the “Great Cookie Search,” in which kids ski the trails looking for hidden snowflake signs. At the end, they are rewarded with a cookie. By the way, children age five and under are admitted free.

The full-service nordic center also features a cafe that serves soups, chili, grilled cheese sandwiches, and other tasty treats.

Lessons are available, as well as rental gear. Viking offers private, group, and family lessons.

If you need a place to stay, Viking offers two on-site rental properties; the farmhouse sleeps 10, the apartment, 8. The clubhouse and warming hut can be rented for group parties.
